Description
No 48 on Fore Street is a mid-19th century building, with the second floor added around 1887. It has two storeys and two bays, featuring a honey-coloured Bath stone front. The building has a moulded cornice with a blocking course and a concealed hipped roof covered with double Roman tiles and ridge cresting, along with a brick chimney on the right side.
The corners are adorned with Doric pilasters on the first floor, which are capped with a moulded cornice and continue above as crude Corinthian pilasters with fluted bases. On the second floor, there are two 2-light plate glass sash windows with square mullions and moulded cills. The shop front, dating from the mid-19th century, is well-preserved and includes a common fascia for two doors and two windows, with side pilasters and brackets.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 37 to 44, No 38A, and Nos 46 to 48, which collectively form a notable architectural ensemble with No 13 Church Walk. No 43 is also of local interest.
