Description
The Savernake War Memorial is a limestone structure erected in the 1920s, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War.
The memorial features an octagonal base with two steps. The lower step is inscribed in black painted lettering with the words "LEST WE FORGET," while the upper step bears the inscription: "DECLARATION OF WAR AUG 4 1914/ ARMISTICE NOVEMBER 11 1918/ PEACE SIGNED JUNE 28 1919." It also lists the names of two men who died during the Second World War, covering the years 1939-1945.
Above the steps, there is an octagonal plinth with a moulded base that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY/ OF THE ABOVE/ MEN OF/ THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR." The names of the fallen are engraved on the faces of the plinth.
The shaft of the memorial is also octagonal, featuring a carved blind arcade of lancets with trefoil heads on both the lower and upper sections. The upper section is adorned with bands of incised strapwork and culminates in a capital that displays the inscription "IHS" on the north and south faces. At the top, the memorial is crowned with a Celtic cross, which has boss terminals on the arms and at the four points of the circle.
