Description
This nursing home, located at No. 4 Mill Road, dates from the 18th century and is a two-storey building with an attic, constructed of red brick. It features a band between the storeys and has a hipped roof covered with old tiles. The main block is symmetrical with three bays and includes a slightly lower, recessed extension on the right side. There are modern additions at the back and to the left.
The main block has two three-light dormers flanking a central two-light dormer. Both floors have two tripartite flush architrave framed sash windows with intact glazing bars. The central entrance is highlighted by early 19th-century double doors with marginal glazing, set within a plain surround that features a plain arched fanlight. The doorcase is adorned with pilasters, flat curved brackets supporting a broken entablature, and an open dentil pediment. Above the entrance, there is a single central window on the first floor.
To the right, there is an 18th-century extension that includes an early 19th-century canted bay window with sash lights and glazing bars, topped with a moulded cornice. The ground floor features a much larger canted bay window with a moulded cornice. Additionally, there is a late 18th to early 19th-century extension that has one flush framed sash window on the first floor and a door with six flush panels on the ground floor, which is set under a porch that was formerly supported by Doric columns but has been renewed in plain wood.
