Description

Farmadine House is a large house, now divided into retirement flats, dating from approximately 1800. It is constructed of red brick with slate roofs and has an approximate L-shaped plan. The two- and three-storey front, facing west, has three bays, with the northern bay projecting forward. A stone cornice runs along the top of the front elevation, and a brick string divides the floors. The windows have rubbed brick voussoirs. The roof is shallow, hipped, with stacks on either side of the northern bay. A central, projecting Doric porch has cast stone columns and a wrought and cast-iron decorative balcony railing above. The recessed and panelled doorcase contains a door with upper 3x3-pane glazing and lower recessed panels, along with a decorative overlight. A 19th-century horned sash window is adjacent to the south, and a French window with steps and ball finials is adjacent to the north—the window leaf has a lower panel and plain upper glazing with an overlight. On the first floor, a central round-headed stair window has 2x2 panes with radial glazing bars. Adjacent sashes on either side have 3x4 panes. An early 19th-century wing extends to the north, matching the style but rising three storeys and featuring segment-headed windows and doorways. This wing has a round-headed C20 door approached by steps. Its windows are sashes with 4x4 and 3x4 panes. The rear, eastern elevation mirrors the front, with three and two bays respectively. The principal southern block has a central doorway approached by steps and a cast stone cornice hood with a dentilled string and flat pilasters with capitals and bases. The C20 door is fully glazed with 3x6 panes. Ground floor windows include one plain sash and one with 3x4 panes; first floor windows are all sashes with 3x4 panes. The northern unit is similar to the front, with three storeys and six 3x4-paned sash windows, plus a C20 2-light casement window on the first floor (4x3 panes). The garden, southern elevation has three bays, with two large 19th-century timber bay windows on the ground floor, featuring large sash windows reaching to the lower steps (1x2, 2x2, and 1x2 panes). Leaded roofs are present. A 3x4-paned sash window is positioned between the bay windows. The first floor features three 3x4-paned sash windows, the outer one having horns. A secondary rear wing projects deeply at the eastern side. A stack is present on each unit. The principal block’s ground floor has a single, segment-headed sash window (4x4 panes). The first floor has a pair of simple, narrow, segment-headed sash windows. The secondary block, rendered on the ground floor, is blank except for a single blocked first-floor window. Inside, 19th-century woodwork remains, including architraves with reeded details and corner paterae, panelled doors, a well stair with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, and four marble fireplaces, three white and one black.
