Description

Falcon Grove is a house built in the mid to later 19th century, reportedly in 1850, with additions made in 1890. It is constructed of stuccoed brick with a slate roof. The house has an irregular L-shaped plan, with a rear wing and a narrower rear addition. It features an attic and cellar, and extends over two storeys.

The north-facing front elevation has a principal two-window range and a stack rising from the roof apex. A gabled cross-wing projects slightly to the west, featuring single windows and clasping pilaster buttresses. The eaves are adorned with consoles and console brackets, and the gable displays bold barge-boards. Windows are framed with moulded architraves, with eared details on the first floor and rosette-decorated ribbons above the ground-floor windows. All windows have consoles. The central doorway is similarly decorated with rosettes, a frieze under a flat hood, and simple pilaster capitals. It has an overlight and a four-panel door with glazed upper panels. To the east, sash windows have all-round margin lights, while a 19th-century rectangular bay window has been inserted on the west side. This bay window has a dentilled cornice and sash windows with margin lights. The first-floor windows are similar with side margin lights only. An attic window, round-headed with rosettes on the imposts and two panes, is located in the cross-wing.

The south-facing east elevation shows the gable of the principal range and a two-storey bay window. A single window range extends to the south, with a narrower two-window wing visible behind. This elevation is similarly styled to the north but less ornate. The north-south wing features a bay window with a hipped, three-cant roof and plain sash windows; the centre windows have margin lights. An adjacent window to the south mirrors this design.

The rear wing to the south has ground-floor casement windows with glazing bars – one a three-light window with 6x4 panes, the other a single light with 3x4 panes. A single sash window with all-round margin lights is located on the first floor. The west-facing flank wall of the north-south wing has two partially external stacks. The ground floor windows are sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes and 3x2 panes respectively), while the first floor has four similar sashes with side margin lights. A 19th-century addition to the south is inset and lower. The ground floor has a central French window with four panes on either side, and a 20th-century two-light casement window. The first floor has one sash window with margin lights and one 20th-century top-opening casement.

The south rear elevation reveals projecting gabled wings to the east and west, with a further gabled addition projecting between the wings. A narrow gap houses a back doorway with overlight and a flush four-panelled door. Above this is a single first-floor sash window with all-round margin lights. A gable with bold barge-boards is visible to the east, and a large 20th-century fixed pane three-light window sits below.

The interior features good contemporary marble chimney-pieces in the drawing room and dining room (grey and black respectively), along with two cast-iron chimney-pieces, one decorated, in the bedrooms. Window shutters remain, including a lifting shutter in the dining room.
