Description

This former primary school, now closed, was built between 1872 and 1873 by George Aitchison Jnr. and funded by Alfred Seymour of Knoyle House. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a steeply pitched tiled roof with coped verges, designed in an L-plan layout and is single-storey.

The entrance front is positioned at right angles to the road and includes a shouldered doorway topped with a flat stone hood supported by consoles and flanked by carved fluted pilasters. To the left of the entrance are two 2-light windows with Moorish cusped heads and a central shaft, all with a dripstone above. To the right of the door is the gable end of the main schoolroom, which has a large pointed window with three lights separated by shafts and oculi above each light. The tympanum of this window is filled with ornate plate tracery featuring a floral design, and there is a moulded string course that extends over as a hoodmould. A square sundial is located on the gable, and a turret at the apex supports a weathervane.

The main front facing the road has five 2-light windows, all with Moorish heads and centre shafts. The eaves of the roof are supported by extended rafters with carved ends. The east gable end features a rose window, while the rear of the wing and main range have cross windows and 2-light mullioned casements. This school is noted for being unusually original and expensive for a village school, provided by the local gentry.
