Description

Farley Primary School is a school building constructed in 1867 by the architect George Aitchison. It is made of red brick and features hipped Welsh slate roofs with a brick stack. The building has a rectangular plan, with the schoolmaster's house located to the right of the front entrance.

The one-storey schoolroom has broad bracketed eaves and small-paned windows, which are arranged in three semi-circular arches on the left side and in a smaller opening under a flat arch on the right side. The entrance consists of half-glazed doors set within a moulded and slightly projecting architrave, which has an outer brick moulding and a splayed cornice that rises to the eaves. There are also moulded cill and impost courses.

The two-storey master's house features broad bracketed eaves and a gable facing to the left. It has pilasters that divide a three-light window with flat brick arches above 6/6-pane sashes, and a similar arch above a 1/1-pane ground-floor sash. To the right, there is a lean-to porch with a shouldered arch for the doorway, which is positioned below two 4/4-pane sashes under similar arches. The rear of the building includes similar arched windows for the schoolroom and glazing bar sashes for the master's house.

The interior retains original joinery, showcasing a carefully detailed and well-composed design by a notable local architect. Aitchison also designed the primary school at East Knoyle.
