Description

This is a primary school built in 1851 and 1852, likely designed by Benjamin Ferrey for the Church of England, with funding from the parish incumbents as indicated by dated inscriptions. The building features squared rubble in courses with ashlar quoins and details, topped by a plain tile roof. It has coped gables with moulded ashlar kneelers, an offset plinth with chamfered ashlar capping, and a moulded string course at the first floor level. The school is two storeys high and is arranged in an L shape, with a gabled wing projecting to the right from the main gabled range. A lower gabled cross wing, added in 1852, is attached to the left gable wall and is designed in a simpler style.

The main entrance to the 1851 block features double doorways set into the right angle of the main range and the wing, with evidence of a former porch roof supported on moulded corbels in this angle. To the left, there is a pair of 4-light mullioned windows within a rectangular frame, each light topped with a trefoiled head. Above, on the first floor, is a 2-light arched window with a quatrefoil tracery head, raised in a cross gablet, flanked by two 2-light lancet windows with trefoil heads. The gable end wall of the wing has similar 5-light lancet windows on both floors. The later wing's gable end wall features a doorway with a Caernarvon arched head to the right and a plain 3-light wide window with a transom to the left. Above, there is a similar 2-light window to the left and a single light to the right over the doorway. The left side wall has a pair of similar 3-light windows on both floors, with the heads of the upper windows raised into cross gablets. The 20th-century extensions at the rear are not of interest. The building has group value with the Abbey Church and Vicarage. The interior has not been inspected.
