Description

The Waterloo memorial is located in the churchyard of Romsey Abbey, to the south of the Abbey church. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a square base with three battered stages, each separated by flat abaci. The top stage is topped with an urn or vase that has lobed ornament and grotesque heads. The lowest stage includes an inset marble plaque that reads: 'THIS COLUMN WAS ERECTED / BY A YOUNG ARCHITECT / OF THIS TOWN / IN COMMEMORATION / OF THE VICTORIOUS BATTLE OF / WATERLOO / IN WHICH BRITISH VALOUR / WAS TRIUMPHANT / AND SECURED / TO THE CONTENDING POWERS / OF EUROPE / TRANQUILLITY AND PEACE / JUNE 18TH 1815'.
