Description

The Abbey Church of St Mary and St Ethelflaeda, likely founded in 907 by Edward the Elder, was reconstituted by Edgar in 967 and dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelflaeda (Elfleda). The existing structure primarily dates from the 12th century, with rebuilding continuing until around 1230. It is constructed from stone sourced from Chilmark. There is a 13th-century wall painting located on the west wall of the south transept, adjacent to Romsey Road. The churchyard features a broad central walk lined with pollarded trees, creating a pleasant garden space near the town. The layout of the churchyard and the approach to the church from the east are both well-designed.
