Description

The gate lodges to the road, along with the archway and screen wall, are located on the north side of the front garden of No. 70, The Close. These are a symmetrical pair of early 19th-century single-storey lodges made of stock brick, positioned to flank the entrance to the stable yard on the right side of the house. They feature low-pitched hipped roofs covered with slate and have flat eaves. Each lodge has one sash window with glazing bars on the front. The south lodge includes a recessed verandah or covered way on its south side, supported by thin iron Doric columns. The lodges are connected to the house by a rendered screen wall that has a tall three-centred archway flanked by buttresses. All the listed buildings in The Close create an impressive group.
