Description
The retaining wall, screen railings, piers, and gates to the front garden of No 68, The Close, date from around 1720. The wrought iron screen along the west walk features corner piers made of alternating bands of red brick and stone, topped with moulded caps. The central gate piers are similarly designed and crowned with stone balls. There is a low brick retaining wall with stone coping between the piers, and the wrought iron screen consists of plain bars and a top rail, with scroll panel standards that include cresting and urns at intervals on the projecting piers of the retaining wall. The central gates have matching side panels and a scroll overthrow. All the listed buildings in The Close create an exceptional group.
