Description
Alderbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated on a grassed area between The Green and the main road in the settlement. Nearby, to the west across The Green, is an early 20th century memorial and water trough that is also listed.
The memorial is made of Chilmark stone and features a wheel-head cross above a moulded collar, which sits atop a tall, four-sided, tapering shaft. This structure rises from a narrow, square base. The main inscriptions and names are located on the cross shaft, with all lettering incised and painted black.
Both the west and east faces of the shaft display the inscription, "1914 – 1919 / THESE DIED IN WAR/ THAT WE AT PEACE MIGHT LIVE." There are 26 names listed beneath these inscriptions, with 13 names on each face. The south face of the shaft includes the inscription, "1939 – 1945/ THESE DIED IN/ WAR, THAT WE AT/ PEACE MIGHT LIVE./ (14 NAMES)."
On the upper surface of the base, around the four sides of the shaft, are the words: (west) "THEIR NAME/ (south) LIVETH FOR/ (east) EVERMORE/ (north) ECCLUS XLIV. 14."
The memorial is enclosed within a square gravelled area, marked by small stone posts at each corner. Additionally, two small stone flower holders are positioned on the base, flanking either side of the shaft.
