Description
A row of houses dating from the 17th or early 18th century, this group comprises numbers 53 to 59 Newtown. The buildings have stone-tiled roofs and prominent eaves projecting between the gables. Most windows have 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars, although some are sash windows with leaded glass. Number 58 features a projecting wooden bay window on the ground floor, supported by wooden brackets. Each house is two stories tall, with attic space, and incorporates a plain, square-headed door opening to the side of the frontage. Weathered string courses mark the levels of the first and second floors, and at the base of the gable pediments. Most gables feature blocked oval windows known as "bulls-eyes." Number 53 differs from the others in its lower height and the presence of a central doorway, topped by a central gable containing a 2-light leaded wooden casement. The other windows on this property are 3-light casements on the first floor and 4-light casements on the ground floor, all with moulded stone mullions and dripmoulds. The group is designated as Grade II* for its group value.
