Description

The Town Hall, built in 1887, features an asymmetric plan and is constructed of stone. It showcases a gabled front with shaped gables topped by pointed pediments, reflecting a "Jacobethan" style, and includes a central Italianate tower with a short spire. The building has three storeys, with the left side lit by a large round-headed window that has intricate square and half-round tracery, along with a central oriel balcony. To the right, there is a six-light oriel window on the first floor that mirrors the tracery of the left window, topped with a balustrade. The second floor contains a four-light mullion and transom window, while the ground floor features six windows of various shapes.

The central entrance beneath the tower is framed by fluted pilasters and a round-headed doorway adorned with decorative orders and a key featuring "VR." Above the entrance is a cornice inscribed with "Jub Vic. Reg Jun 20. 1887" and flanked by fluted consoles supporting a balcony. To the left, an angled stair turret culminates in a bell dome, which is topped by two chimneys. The tower itself is equipped with a clock and features side piers, a central band, a modillion cornice, and an oriel balcony in front of the clock. Gablets are positioned at the base of the spire. The front of the building is decorated with a variety of devices, mottoes, and arms, including two panels depicting factory workers. The rear and east side of the building have similar elevations, with the east front being the most orderly.
