Description

The Market Hall, located on Market Street, is a former market chambers built in 1861, attributed to C. E. Davis. This three-storey stone building is designed in the Italianate style and features a gabled central attic. The wide façade includes five round-headed windows in the attic and five openings on both the ground and first floors. Large brackets support the eaves and gable, while the second floor showcases impost mouldings, billet hoods, and stiff leaf foliage.

At the center of the building, above the main entrance, is a sculpted vesca containing the emblems of the Lamb and Flag and the Wheatsheaf. The first floor openings also feature stiff leaf foliage imposts, billet hoods, and panels below the late glazed sash windows. The ground floor has an open arcade with round piers, very stiff leaf capitals, and plant motifs. An inscription runs along the outer order of the arcade, stating: "The Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof"; "Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord"; "Erected A.D. 1861 by William Stancomb Lord of the Manor"; "A false balance is abomination to the Lord"; "Owe no man anything." The engaged capitals at each end are further sculpted, with a plough and sheep on the right and a woolsack along with two types of spinning wheels on the left.
