Description
Castle House, located at No 62 on Castle Street, dates from around 1796. The building has two storeys on the right side and three storeys on the left. It features an ashlar stone front set on a projecting double stepped plinth. The side piers and cill bands create rectangular compartments on each floor. The three-storey section has two windows on the first and second floors, and three windows on the ground floor, one of which is blind with a sash rebate. It has a moulded cornice and a parapet with moulded coping.
The right-hand section projects as an angular bay, featuring three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The entrance includes a six-panel central door with an arched fanlight that has a curved and circular pattern, surrounded by a stone architrave on moulded springers and a doorhead flanked by Doric pilasters, all set in a recess approached by four steps. Notably, fine wrought iron work has been lost.
Castle House is part of a group with Nos 51 to 60 (consecutive), 60A, and 61B, as well as the Court House. No 51 is noted for its local interest.
