Description

STEEPLE LANGFORD WARMINSTER ROAD SU 03 NW (off south side) 2/102 Barn to west of Bathampton House GV II Barn. Probably C16. Rubble stone chamfered plinth about 1.5 metres high with weatherboarding on timber-frame, tiled roof. Seven bays. North side has two pairs of double planked doors to bays 2 and 6. South side has pair of double planked doors to bay 2, blocked opening to bay 6. Gable ends have small shuttered windows. Good roof structure comprising three raised arch-braced cruck trusses to eastern bays, blades are halved at apex, only truss 3 retains v-struts above collar, but mortices for them noted on trusses 2 and 3, three western trusses are later tie-beam and collar trusses with queen struts to collar, curved bracing from jowled main posts to tie-beams, truss 4 formerly closed as shown by wattle holes. Rafters of western bays renewed C20, but eastern bays retain two tiers of through purlins with curved wind braces.
