Description

The barn located to the west of Bathampton House is likely from the 16th century. It features a rubble stone chamfered plinth that stands about 1.5 meters high, with weatherboarding on a timber frame and a tiled roof. The barn has seven bays. On the north side, there are two pairs of double planked doors located at bays 2 and 6. The south side has a pair of double planked doors at bay 2 and a blocked opening at bay 6. The gable ends have small shuttered windows.

Inside, the barn has a well-constructed roof featuring three raised arch-braced cruck trusses in the eastern bays. The blades of these trusses are halved at the apex, and only the third truss retains v-struts above the collar, although mortices for v-struts are noted on the second and third trusses. The three western trusses are later tie-beam and collar trusses with queen struts to the collar, and they include curved bracing from the jowled main posts to the tie-beams. The fourth truss was formerly closed, as indicated by wattle holes. The rafters in the western bays were renewed in the 20th century, but the eastern bays still have two tiers of through purlins with curved wind braces.
