Description

Deptford Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was altered around 1810. It is constructed from dressed limestone and features a tiled roof with brick stacks and coped verges. The building is two stories tall with an eight-window south front. This facade includes three French windows and two three-light casements, with some openings altered or blocked. The first floor has a moulded string course and four two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements, along with one two-light casement and three blocked mullioned casements. There is a hipped attic dormer as well.

On the right side, there is a large twelve-pane margin-pane sash window on the first floor and a small sash window in the attic, along with a reset half-glazed door leading to the rear basement. The left side features a large twelve-pane margin-pane sash window to the left, a two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement to the rear basement, a four-light casement on the ground floor, a blocked sash window on the front first floor, and a small sash window in the attic. The rear outshut has been raised to the first floor in Flemish bond brick, dating from the early 19th century, and a rear entrance was created at the first floor level due to the house being built on a slope. This entrance has central double half-glazed doors with Adam-style fanlights.

The interior was altered in the early 19th century, featuring a new entrance hall and stairs with stick balusters, and the addition of a rear drawing room and bedroom. The kitchen now occupies the space of the former dairy, which has flagstone floors and a blocked open fireplace. These alterations were made for Mr. Gourlay, a gentleman farmer and advocate for social and agrarian reform.
