Great Barn, 20 Metres North West Of Axford Farmhouse

The Great Barn, located 20 meters northwest of Axford Farmhouse, is a barn dating from the 16th to 17th century. It features weatherboarded timber framing with a thatched roof, which is tiled at the south end. The barn consists of 11 bays with aisles. There is a part upper floor in the north bay, known as bay 1, and a former framed division between bays 2 and 3. A new partition has been added between bays 4 and 5, and there is a first floor in bay 11 that forms a mill adjoining the leet from the River Kennet. The barn has cart entrances in bays 6 and 10. Notable architectural details include jowled posts with corner braces to ties and plates, raking struts to high collars, and two purlins, with the lower tier being windbraced over the cart entrance.
