Description

Riverside House is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It features a combination of brick laced flint and timber framing with brick noggings on the upper floor, and a later brick wing. The roofs are made of stone slate. The building is two stories high with attics and part of a cellar. It consists of three bays with a two-bay wing. The earlier part of the house has a central stack with rooms on either side, and an added bay on the north side that is now divided into a larder and woodstore. Between 1690 and 1700, a stair hall and reception room were added in the wing. The house has a six-panelled door leading to a terrace, although the canopy has been removed, and it features 20-pane sash windows with brick segmental heads, likely a replacement from the early 19th century. There is a plat band and a timber moulded eaves cornice. The earlier section includes various timber and leaded casements, with small square framing three panels high and straight tension braces to the gable. The ground floor, made of brick and flint, may have replaced lower framing. The block was extended with brick refacing on the south gable in the late 17th century.

Inside, there is an open well stair with a dado that is fielded and panelled, featuring two turned balusters for each tread and a wreathed rail, along with a stone flag floor. The reception room and bedroom above have narrow fielded panelling and a bolection panel over a moulded fire surround, with niches on either side of the stack. The earlier structure has large scantling spine beams, and the newel stair has been altered from its original position behind the stack. An Adam fireplace has been introduced from a house in Leicester.
