Description

ST 85 NW WESTWOOD IFORD HILL (South side)

6/239 Walls and gateway to kitchen garden at Iford Manor

GV II

Walls and gateway enclosing garden on south side of road to Iford Manor. C18 walls, altered and gateway inserted c1905 by H. Peto. Coursed rubble stone walls with flat coping. Several blocked door and window openings facing road suggest a cottage on this site. Gateway facing road incorporates C18 piers with fielded panels, wooden flat lintel and planked door, moulded coping over with life- size bronze statue of reclining male figure. A large house is said to have occupied the site of the kitchen garden, demolished early C19 by Rooke family. (E. Cartwright-Hignett, The Gardens at Iford Manor, 1985)
