Description
The gate piers at the west end of the Great Terrace in the gardens at Iford Manor are likely from the early 19th century, while the surrounding walls were constructed around 1907 by H.A. Peto. The gate piers are made of square limestone ashlar and feature composite capitals, each topped with the Rooke family crest, which includes a rook and a wheatsheaf. These piers are connected by a concave ashlar dwarf wall that includes a stone seat. The original iron gates or grille were removed by Peto. Rubble stone walls with moulded flat coping connect the gate piers to the Casita on the right, and on the left, there are fragments of Italian sculpture. The Rooke family resided at Iford in the 19th century, and Peto modified the arrangement between the piers as part of his redesign of the Great Terrace.
