Description

The wellhead on the Great Terrace is located at the west end of the terrace. It features a sixth-century Byzantine capital from near Ravenna, which was repurposed by Peto as a mock wellhead and installed around 1907. The well bucket is suspended from a spiral fluted Corinthian Roman column, topped with a French stone lion. This wellhead is one of several sculptural elements on the Great Terrace, all brought to the site by Peto.
