Description
This is a pair of houses located at 19 and 20 Devizes Road, built in the mid-18th century, with a third house added in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed from ironstone rubble and topped with thatched roofs. The original pair, Nos 19 and 20, features end stacks and a two-storey front with five windows. The ironstone is pointed in white lime, with ashlar quoins and a red brick dentilled eaves cornice. The five bays are uniquely linked by vertically alternating parti-coloured window jambs, which are rusticated in ashlar and originally red brick.
On the ground floor, there are triple casement windows alternating with doors; the casements have been renewed, while the jambs are rusticated with rendered lintels featuring ashlar wedge keystones. The outer window lintels have a curved top, and the centre lintel has been altered. Above, there is a thin ashlar string course, with rustication continuing over, framing 12-pane windows above the doors, triple casements to the left and centre, and paired 12-pane windows to the right, which are likely the only original windows. The rendered lintels have ashlar wedge keys and end voussoirs.
No 21 is a two-storey, two-window house with an end stack and ashlar quoins. It features leaded casement windows set in ashlar-framed cambered-head surrounds, with pairs of windows above, a triple casement below, and a door. All three houses have doors that are sheltered by 20th-century gabled timber porches. A building is indicated on the site in a map by J. Powell from 1763.
