Description

This is a pair of houses located in West End, Kirkbymoorside. They were built in the late 18th century and subsequently altered. The front of the houses is brick, now painted, with a stone plinth; the rear and sides are of coursed rubble stone construction. They have a pantile roof and brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt.

The houses have a two-storey, four-window facade. Raised quoins are visible on the front elevation. The entrance to the right-hand house (No. 18) features a panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight, set within a pilastered doorcase. The entrance to the left-hand house (No. 20) has a six-pane door under a rectangular fanlight and a keyed, gauged brick arch. A canted bay window with a projecting cornice and four-pane sashes is located to the left of the entrance to No. 18. The remaining windows are four-pane sashes with stone sills and keyed, gauged brick arches. A raised first-floor band is visible, and a cavetto-moulded eaves course runs along the roofline. The steeply pitched roof has coped gables and shaped kneelers.

Inside No. 18 is an 18th-century open-string staircase.
