Description

The building at 18-21 Silver Street dates to around 1862 and was constructed as part of road improvements. It is a unified composition of three storeys, with an ashlar facade and a symmetrical arrangement of windows, one plus three, then two plus two plus two. The building is slightly angled at its eastern end. It features a moulded cornice and parapet, topped with a moulded cope and balustrade panels that obscure the windows, except for those on the first building. All windows are glazing bar sashes, except for those at number 18, and they all have eared architraves. A moulded sill string runs along the second floor, while a cill band is visible on the first floor. The ground floor has a common fascia with a cornice and Doric pilasters, although these are missing from numbers 20 and 21. A wide throughpassage is located to the right of number 18 and also incorporates Doric pilasters. At the rear of number 18, above the throughpassage, there is a timber-built structure containing remnants of coloured glazing. The roof is punctuated by three ashlar ridge chimneys, each with moulded capping. Numbers 18 to 21 form a cohesive group.
