Description

The buildings at 53 to 69 St Anne's Street comprise a range of early to 18th and 19th century structures, originally extending as far as numbers 67 and 69, which have since been demolished.

No. 53, dating from the early 19th century, is a three-storey building of painted brick with a hipped slate roof and a moulded cornice. Its front onto St Anne's Street features two windows; one is a sash window with glazing bars, and the other has been altered to a casement. A small, early 19th century shop front is present on the ground floor, framed by Doric pilasters, with a two-light window and a panelled and glazed door, along with a frieze and cornice above. A six-panel house door incorporates a semi-circular fanlight. The return front to Dolphin Street features tripartite windows on the upper floors, with the second floor retaining original glazing bars while the first floor has been altered to casements. The ground floor has two small shop windows flanked by pilasters, sharing a common frieze and cornice.

No. 55 is an early 19th century, three-storey building with a stucco-faced elevation and a gable end slate roof. It has two windows on the front elevation, with narrow, recessed sashes on the second floor that have been fitted with later glazing. A modern shop front and door occupy the ground floor.

No. 57, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, is a two-storey building with a stucco-faced front and a gable end tiled roof. The first floor features two flush-framed sash windows while the ground floor includes a similar window and a three-light shop window and door in a thin pilaster frame, surmounted by a frieze and plain cornice.

Numbers 59 to 65 are early 18th century cottages, stucco faced, with a band separating the ground and first floors. They have steep-pitched gable end old tile roofs with four altered gabled dormers. No. 59 has three irregularly spaced windows on the ground floor, with casements, and paired sash windows on the first floor, accompanied by a modern door with a flat hood. No. 61 has a two-light casement and a small window on the first floor, and a broad flush-framed sash on the ground floor. No. 63 is similar in appearance, and the entrances to both numbers 61 and 63 are paired under a common flat hood and feature six-panel doors. No. 65 has modern lattice casements on the first floor and a three-light window on the ground floor, with a modern Tudor-style door.

The building at No. 52 is considered to form a group with numbers 109 to 119 (odd) on Dolphin Street.
