Description
Standen House is a large house set in parkland, built in the 18th century and mid-19th century. It features grey-buff brick in header bond with dark tiled roofs, and is two storeys tall with an attic. The south front has nine bays, with a central block of three bays that is recessed and three storeys high, topped with a pediment. This block includes a semi-circular projecting entrance hall on the ground floor, where the door is framed by a rusticated stone surround, a grooved voussoir lintel, and a heavy entablature. The building has a brick parapet with panels above and a brick dentilled cornice coping. The central first-floor window has a wide cambered arch, while the other windows, including those in the three-bay wings, are 12-paned sashes with brick raised quoin blocks. There is a plat band and brick corbelled eaves, and the right wing features bow windows. The roof is hipped, with symmetrically placed stacks at the base of the wings. At the back, there is a parallel and earlier rear range behind the centre and right wing, which also has a two-storey bow window at the end, constructed of brick laced flint. The interior was completely remodelled in 1986-1987.
