Description
South Lodge is a cottage that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with some elements from the 17th century. It features a timber frame with colourwashed flint facing at the front and has a thatched roof. The building is a single storey with a cellar and an attic, consisting of three bays. The entrance is located opposite the stack in the left bay, with a second entrance in a thatched porch between the second and third bays. The central bay was originally an open hall and is said to have had a circular open hearth beneath the existing floor, with smoke-blackened roof timbers. The inner room, which is now subdivided, includes a cellar, while the service room behind the stack has been converted into a kitchen. The framing includes corner braces and cambered ties, and there are boarded doors and timber casement windows. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear. Inside, the living room features reserved ovolo moulding on the spine beam and a chamfered fire beam supported by rebuilt brick piers. The roof has clasped purlins.
