Description
The Dower House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 17th century, with significant alterations made in the mid 18th century and extensive remodeling in the early 19th century. The building features Flemish bond brickwork and a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with a south front that has four bays, including a return at the left end that leads to a single storey structure containing the main entrance. The original structure is found within the east bay, which has a chalkstone stack with three brick diagonal shafts. The fourth bay, dating from the 18th century, is constructed of flint with brick dressings and has a plat band. The first two bays and the two-bay return at the left end were added around 1800 and feature twenty-paned sash windows with gauged brick lintels and keystones. A canted entrance was added to the fourth bay around 1915, and the current entrance is located in a link block to the garage, which was formerly a coach house. Inside, the east end bedroom on the first floor has a mid 18th-century fire surround, and there are some panelled doors. The stack includes 20th-century fire surrounds, and the staircase has been altered, likely around 1915.
