Description

The Great Barn, located to the south-west of Brokenborough Farmhouse, is a very large medieval barn, likely originating from the 14th century, with later restoration. It is constructed from squared and coursed rubble, featuring ashlar coped verges and buttress caps, topped with a steeply pitched corrugated asbestos roof. The barn consists of ten bays, with buttresses marking each bay and two symmetrically placed gabled midstreys that have plank gates. There are square pigeon holes on the north end wall. Inside, the barn has a through-purlin roof structure with arched braces supporting the collar beams, and some wind braces are present on the east flank in the three bays to the right of the right midstrey.
