Description

This is a free-standing office building for Kelly Typesetting, dating from the late 19th century. It features good coursed dressed limestone in irregular courses and a double roman tile roof. The building is a long, narrow block set against a hill slope and positioned at right angles to the main building. It has three storeys and a symmetrical front with seven bays in an Italianate style, topped by a low-pitched hipped roof.

The ground floor has four-pane sash windows in flush surrounds with segmental heads and a keystone to the string with a moulded under-edge. The first floor features small four-pane sashes above a cill band, with brackets supporting the cills, and a moulded string that acts as a base course for sixteen short Tuscan pilasters framing the four-pane windows. These pilasters carry brackets to an eaves cornice. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door beneath a deep two-pane overlight, with a segmental head and deep console brackets supporting a cornice that extends from the floor string. There is also a second plank door in the first bay on the left side. The pilaster treatment continues at both ends of the building. The rear is mostly plain, with a projecting central stair housing beneath a swept-down roof. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a handsome example that reflects the former significance of Greenland Mill, to which it originally belonged.
