Description
A gas lamp, which has been converted to electricity, is located west of the west door of the Church of St John the Baptist in Paignton. This lamp is part of a set of four and is likely from the late 19th century, marked by Geo. Smith and Co. Gun Foundry in Glasgow. It features a local red breccia plinth that is octagonal and chamfered, supporting an octagonal chamfered freestone base. The lamp standard is made of cast iron with fluted detailing and a ribbon moulding. The lamp holder is also octagonal and includes a pierced iron crested frieze. This set of lamps is considered an unusual survival.
