Description

A gas lamp, converted to electricity, is located to the south of the south porch of the Church of St John the Baptist in Paignton. This lamp is part of a set of four and is likely from the late 19th century, marked with the stamp of Geo. Smith and Co. Gun Foundry in Glasgow. It features a plinth made of local red breccia, with an octagonal chamfered base of freestone above it. The lamp standard is made of cast iron and has a fluted design with a ribbon moulding. The lamp holder is also octagonal and includes a pierced iron crested frieze. This set of lamps is considered an unusual survival.
