Description
This is a gas lamp, which has been converted to electricity, located to the north of the north door of the Church of St John the Baptist in Paignton. It is part of a set of four lamps, likely dating from the late 19th century, and is stamped with "Geo. Smith and Co. Gun Foundry Glasgow." The lamp features a base made of local red breccia and freestone, with an octagonal chamfered breccia plinth below an octagonal chamfered freestone base. The lamp standard is made of cast iron and is fluted, adorned with a ribbon moulding. The lamp holder is also octagonal and has a pierced iron crested frieze. This set of lamps is considered an unusual survival.
