Description

The Old Brewery Building in Paignton is a brewery structure now used as a shop, dating from the 1860s. It is constructed from local red breccia rubble and features slate roofs with lead rolls and crested ridge tiles. The building has a long rectangular shape that steps down the hill from left to right, with a first-floor entrance likely added in the 20th century at the left end and a malthouse at the right end.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical facade with four windows on the left and two windows for the malthouse on the right. The rectangular block has a hipped roof and four ground-floor windows with painted segmental heads, which are elongated from left to right and fitted with casement windows that have glazing bars. There is a rendered eaves band, and the first floor features four windows with rendered, moulded brackets beside each lintel, along with simple aprons below plain rectangular panels. The malthouse's ground-floor bays are separated by three red sandstone pilasters, each with capitals carved to resemble barrels, topped with a fascia and cornice. The bays have been infilled with shop windows and doors, likely from 1982 when the building was renovated by the Devon Historic Buildings Trust. The first floor includes two recessed casement windows with glazing bars, set beneath simple stuccoed hoods that mimic a pediment and consoles. There are louvred sections below the eaves, along with a ventilator pot featuring a lead tent roof and weathervane. The right side of the malthouse is blind and displays rougher masonry with local grey limestone inclusions, while the rear elevation of the main block is rendered.

The building was previously occupied by the brewery Starkey, Knight and Ford.
