Description
24 and 26 Princes Street is a house that has been divided into two separate residences, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble and has a slate roof that is gabled at one end. The left-end wall has been partly rebuilt in brick, and there is a stack with a plain, stepped, rendered shaft topped with one old chimney pot. The original layout likely featured a single-depth, two-room plan with back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack, probably with a lobby entrance. Each house now has rear additions.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front and doorways on the left and right. Number 26 has a likely 19th-century plank door, while number 24 has a 20th-century door. There are two ground-floor three-light casements and two first-floor two-light casements. Number 26 features external plank shutters, whereas number 24 has modern external rustic shutters.
The interior of number 24 was inspected and includes a fireplace with red breccia jambs and a plain timber lintel, along with the remains of a bread or cream oven to the right. The house has slender hollow-moulded joists, some of which have been replaced, while others likely date from around 1700. A modern stair has replaced the original winder. Access to number 26 was not available at the time of the survey, but it is reported to preserve original ceiling beams. There was also no access to the roof space of number 24.
