Description
This is a churchyard lamp located to the south of the vestry of the Church of St John the Baptist in Paignton. It is a gas lamp that has been converted to electricity, designed to illuminate the churchyard path. This lamp is part of a set of four, likely dating from the late 19th century, and is stamped with "Geo. Smith and Co Gun Foundry Glasgow."
The lamp features a plinth made of local red breccia, which is octagonal and chamfered, sitting below an octagonal chamfered base made of freestone. The lamp standard is made of cast iron and is fluted, adorned with a ribbon moulding. The lamp holder is also octagonal and includes a pierced iron crested frieze. This set of lamps is considered an unusual survival.
