Description
No. 63, including Laywell Cottage, is a house located in Higher Brixham, likely built in the 18th century with some minor alterations from the early 19th century. The front is made of painted stone rubble, while the rear and side walls are roughcast. It has a slated roof with a roughcast chimney, which is probably original and features a tapered cap and an added flue, located on the left end wall. There is a large later chimney, likely made of rendered brick, on the right end wall, and a small rendered chimney on the rear wing.
The front elevation indicates a three-room-and-cross-passage plan with a small rear wing to the right. The house is two storeys high and three windows wide. The doorway is positioned between the two right-hand ground-storey windows. All four ground-storey openings have segmental arches made of painted brick. The door is a late 20th-century plank door. The windows on both storeys are 19th-century wood casements with three lights, each featuring two horizontal glazing bars per light.
