Description

Hearthstone and Hearthstone East, including the front garden wall and gate piers, is a former farmhouse now divided into two private dwellings. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and is constructed of rendered stone rubble, possibly with some cob. The building has a thatched roof and features large stone rubble chimneys on the front wall and rear wing of Hearthstone, with two additional chimneys on the ridge and left end wall of Hearthstone East. The layout suggests it is a three-room-and-cross-passage house with a large addition at the lower left end and a rear wing to the right. The structure has two storeys and is five windows wide. Both houses have plank doors, likely from the 20th century, and feature two- and three-light wood casement windows, some with old hinges and diamond-shaped leaded panes. In front of the houses is a tall stone rubble wall with square gate piers at Hearthstone East. The entrance to Hearthstone is under a round stone rubble arch, probably from the 20th century. A 1975 listing notes that the property was completely but sympathetically restored in the 1930s.
