Description

Quies Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, with walls that are nearly 1 metre thick. The roof is made of rag slate and features gable ends, along with brick stacks at each end and a brick chimney for the rear lateral stack.

The original layout of the house is uncertain, but it consists of three rooms and a cross passage. The room on the far left is heated by an end stack and includes a cloam oven. The central room, located to the left of the passage, is heated by the rear lateral stack, while the room to the right is also heated by an end stack. The passage has lath and plaster walls and contains a framed stair. There is a stone rubble cross wall between the left-hand and central rooms, which aligns with a straight joint on the front elevation, suggesting that the left-hand room may have been added later. This room functioned as a separate dwelling until the mid-20th century.

In the 19th century, outshots were added to the rear of both the right and left rooms, with the left-hand room being raised to two storeys in the mid-20th century. The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high, featuring a regular four-window front. The left side has a 2-light casement window, while the right side has two 19th-century hornless 8-pane sash windows flanking a 20th-century porch located to the right of centre. On the first floor, there is a 2-light casement window and three 19th-century 8-pane sash windows. Inside, there is a framed stair from the late 19th century, and the internal partitions remain intact, although the fireplaces have been altered in the 20th century.
