Description
Pound Cottage (No. 24) and Pound House (No. 26) are two cottages that were originally a farmhouse, dating from the late medieval period and remodeled in the mid-19th century. The buildings have solid roughcast walls and a tiled roof. There is a rendered chimney with a tapered cap, heightened in red brick, on the left end wall, and a capped red brick chimney on the right end wall. The cottages are two storeys high and four windows wide. Each has a six-panelled door with knockers; the top panels are now glazed, and the bottom panels are flush. No. 26 features a late 20th-century wooden porch.
On the ground floor, there are three windows, all with 19th-century wooden casements—four lights to the left and center, and three lights to the right, with three panes per light. The upper-storey windows are similar but consist of three lights, each with two panes per light. The interior has not been inspected recently, but a description from 1975 notes that No. 24 retains a through-passage and some ceiling beams, although much is boxed in. No. 26 shows evidence of an open hall and some studded partitions, with later staircases. There are remains of collar trusses, but the roof has largely been renewed and extended in the 19th century. The property’s deeds are said to date back to 1746.
Additionally, there is a stone rubble front garden wall with rendered chamfered coping, and square stone rubble gate piers with rendered pyramidal caps.
