Description

A pair of cottages, originally a farmhouse, dating to the second half of the 17th century with later alterations. The front is plastered, while the remainder of the building is constructed from local stone rubble. The chimneys have stone shafts raised in brick, and the roof is thatched.

The cottages are situated facing south-east, with their western end terraced into a hillside. The original layout likely comprised three rooms and a cross-passage, although the present arrangement reflects a subdivision into two cottages. The lower room on the north-east side has a projecting gable-end stack. On the opposite side of the passage is a hall with a projecting rear lateral stack, and at the upper end, a small inner room, now serving as a stair hall. Secondary, single-room rear blocks project from the rear of each end, both having end stacks.

The front elevation has three windows on each floor with timber casements and glazing bars. The first-floor windows rise into the thatch eaves. Both front doorways have 20th-century plank doors set in plain timber frames. The roof is gable-ended on the right and hipped on the left. A stack on the right end has a stone mounting block attached. A 20th-century brick addition is located on the south-west side wall, and a ground-floor window to the left of it may be a late 17th or early 18th-century timber mullion casement. The north-east rear block has a hipped roof, and the south-west rear block has a gable-ended roof.

Internally, simple carpentry details remain visible, including plain timber lintels above the fireplaces. A late 17th-century screen with scratch-moulded muntins and a similar panelled door separates the passage. The bases of principals are visible on the first floor. A large oven, projecting from the hall stack, is now located within a rear lean-to. A stone butterwell is situated at the south-east end of the front wall.

Lanscombe Cottages are part of a group of attractive listed buildings within an unspoiled village, bordering Cockington Park.
