Description

This balustrade dates to 1853 and was designed by the Harvey brothers as part of the landscaping for Wellswood Park. It surrounds the private park, which extends to approximately three acres, and fronts the Wellswood Park terraces. The balustrade stands on a low plinth constructed of snecked local grey limestone, topped with a moulded coping. Above the plinth is a balustrade featuring interlaced circular patterns with faceted blocks at the joints. A coped moulded handrail sits above the balustrade. Piers are spaced at intervals and have round-headed sunk panels with faceted block decoration, culminating in moulded oversailing caps with rounded tops. Two piers retain remnants of pineapple finials. The balustrade is a significant feature contributing to the overall design and group value of the Grade II* Wellswood Park terrace.
