Description
The horse trough and drinking fountain, located at SX 9312 6410, was built around 1900 and is signed by Jenkins. It is made of freestone and bronze. The structure features a large rectangular trough with an ogee moulding that projects forward at the center. Above the trough is a tall freestone tablet adorned with bronze torches on either side and a swan-necked pediment. The tablet is supported by massive scrolled brackets, which hold a cartouche containing an inscription with mosaic work below it. The drinking fountain extends from the front of the tablet and consists of two serpentine bronze dolphins that form a fish-head spout. The inscription commemorates John Snelgrove of St Elmo. This piece serves as a grand urban example of street furniture.
