Description
The Hyde Vale Fountain and cattle trough are a drinking fountain and cattle trough located in Hyde Vale. The cattle trough is dated 1877. The drinking fountain is approximately 9 feet high and constructed of stone, with a square plan, hipped roof, and a squat octagonal shaft topped by a cast iron bracket. The fountain was restored in 2021, and an original street light was reintroduced to the bracket. It features four semi-circular stone bowls with cambered arches above, and sits on two square stone steps. A rectangular granite cattle trough abuts the fountain; it has two curbing stones facing south and a dog trough beneath. The trough was erected by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association, and bears an inscription on the west end reading βIN MEMORIAM ROBERT TROTTER ESQ 1877.β
