Description

This is a terrace of three houses located on Ranscombe Road in Lower Brixham. They were built in the early 19th century. The houses have solid rendered walls and slated roofs, with rendered chimneys on the right side walls. Each house is two storeys high and two windows wide, with a doorway to the left. There is an additional doorway at the left-hand end of the terrace. The doors have been altered in the late 20th century, with a glazed porch added to No. 33. The windows are box-framed wooden sash windows with 6 over 6 panes at No. 31, and three top panes surviving in the upper sashes at No. 35. A continued sill band runs along the upper storey. A deep, flat eaves cornice finishes the facade. The houses stand elevated above the road, with tall retaining walls of painted stone rubble that contribute significantly to their appearance. Long flights of steps, constructed from slabs of Devonian limestone, lead up to the houses; the steps at Nos. 31 and 35 are particularly noteworthy, as is the tall wall of painted stone rubble on either side of the steps at No. 35. The terrace is included on the list for group value.
