Description

Nos. 83 and 85, including the front area walls, railings, and gate, are houses located on King Street in Lower Brixham. They date from the early to mid-19th century. The buildings have solid rendered walls and a hipped slated roof, with a rendered chimney on the left side wall. The main house has three storeys, while the former service wing, now a separate house (No. 85), has two storeys. Each building features three windows across the front.

The main house has a symmetrical façade with a round-arched central doorway that includes a cornice supported by consoles. It has two-panelled double doors with a knocker and an old metal letterbox, along with a fanlight that has radial bars ending in small circles. The windows are barred sashes, with six over six panes on the ground and second storeys, and three over six panes on the third storey. There are rusticated pilaster strips at each end of the front, a raised sill-band on the second storey, and a deep flat eaves-cornice with shaped brackets at each corner. The gutter is decorated with lion-heads. The sill-band and eaves-cornice continue around both side walls, which do not have any openings.

The service wing features late 20th-century small-paned wood casements and is set back from the main house. The buildings are elevated above street level, with a painted stone rubble retaining wall in front. This wall extends upwards to form stone piers on the left and in the middle. Original iron railings with moulded heads on the uprights span the entire frontage, returning at the right end to protect the steps leading up from the street, where there is a matching gate. Originally, there was another gate at the bottom of the steps, and a tall, square pier of painted stone rubble remains on the right side, with the base of another on the left. Part of the retaining wall has been rendered, likely in the late 20th century when garage doors, a window, and a house door were added. At the left end, there is a doorway with brick jambs and a segmental arch, probably inserted in the late 19th century.
