Description

A row of five cottages, likely dating to the early 19th century, and possibly incorporating earlier fabric, is located on Ranscombe Road in Lower Brixham. The cottages include a wall extending along Ranscombe Road. They have solid rendered walls, with a stone rubble base visible on the rear walls facing Heath Road. The roofs are hipped and slate-covered, with five tall rendered chimneys: one on the gable fronting Ranscombe Road, one on the ridge, two on the rear wall facing Heath Road, and one on the gable end of number 5. The cottages are arranged in a single range set at right angles to Ranscombe Road, backing onto Heath Road; numbers 1 and 2 are set at an angle to the rest of the row. The cottages are two storeys high. Numbers 1 to 3 are one window wide, while numbers 4 and 5 are two windows wide. Paired doorways are centrally positioned in numbers 1 and 2, with a single doorway to the right at numbers 3 to 5. Numbers 4 and 5 have four-paned box-framed sash windows. To the left of the range, a gate from Ranscombe Road is marked by a single square gate pier to the right, linked to number 1 by a high wall of rendered stone rubble, with the top ramped up to meet the cottage wall. Facing Ranscombe Road, number 1 has sash windows in each storey to the right; the ground floor window has a single upright glazing bar in each sash. A late 20th-century wood-framed window is located to the left. Three small square windows face Heath Road; the window to the left has a late 20th-century aluminium frame, while the other two have 19th-century four-paned wood casements.
